Drawing architects and designers, LAUFEN space Milano recently hosted an exclusive private tour of the Colour Archaeology installation, first unveiled during Milan Design Week 2024. The exhibition, curated by Roberto Sironi, offers a visual journey through his extensive research project.
Commissioned by LAUFEN and executed by Studio Roberto Sironi, the research embodies LAUFEN's commitment to exploring new expressive languages and multidisciplinary influences. This effort has materialised in a palette of twelve colours, reimagining the most refined shades of the ancient world into contemporary, timeless hues.
Attendees enjoyed a personal tour led by Roberto Sironi, delving deeply into the research which was presented through the graphic design of Beda Achermann and his studio who reworked archival photos of ceramics and images of LAUFEN’s industrial production into abstract collage. The tour continued with an exploration of ten ceramic pieces created in collaboration with ceramicist Luca Mandaglio utilising diverse techniques and materials that bridge the past and present.
The private tour concluded with the presentation of the refined palette of twelve harmonious tones, intriguingly relevant for today’s design landscape and presented through the visual medium Saphirkeramik. All the ceramic pieces have been produced at LAUFEN’s highly innovative production facility in Austria and fired in the world's first electric tunnel kiln powered by renewable energy. The ceramic pieces in the new shades have been combined with faucets, furniture and accessories to create evocative and sophisticated environments.
The Colour Archaeology exhibition project, realised by Matteo Fiorini of Studio Lys, will also be showcased at international locations, initially at the Forum at LAUFEN’S Headquarters near Basel before progressing to LAUFEN spaces worldwide including Vienna, Berlin and Prague.

Roberto Sironi (1983) is an Italian designer, who lives and works in Milan.
His design practice is defined by a research-based and process-oriented approach, where thinking and making converge in the creation of artifacts, which are considered narrative tools to trigger a dialogue with the user. The practice, founded in 2015, embraces different types of design practices, such as product and installation design, strategic research and design consultancy, through the collaboration with institutions, galleries and companies.
